Let's make the fashion industry greener, together

It's no secret that fashion hasn't always been the most eco-friendly industry. We’ve faced some significant challenges in recent years; sustainability is the biggest of them. Let’s be honest: sustainability has become the biggest buzzword in the apparel and fashion world right now. By the year 2030, the carbon footprint of the industry is predicted to increase to 2,790 million tons while fashion waste is predicted to hit 148 million tons. Scary. Isn’t it?

While fast fashion makes shopping for clothes more affordable, it comes at a price. The mass production of cheap clothing compels more people to throw garments away instead of recycling them, which is why fast fashion is often called "landfill fashion."

TWAN has always promised to manufacture clothes that keep our shopper’s choices in consideration. With fair and ethical fashion, we are moving towards a sustainable way of working. Our customers are choosing fair and ethical fashion to preserve traditional craft, and make their clothing more eco-friendly. So how do we do this?

Firstly, let's think about where our fabrics are coming from. Synthetic fabrics like nylon, acrylic, and polyester are actually made from plastic. When we refer to them as plastic, you can instantly recognise the dangers these fabrics when they are created for fashion purposes. These plastic microfibers never biodegrade. They endlessly pollute the ocean where they absorb chemical pollutants and are ingested by marine life. When washed, they even shed tiny plastic fibers that are so small they escape wastewater treatment plants into the environment.

We are proud to lead the way for sustainable fashion in our region by rejecting the creation of new synthetic fibres, and opting for organic or recycling fabrics only. To inspire change and push for the future of sustainable fashion in Dubai and across the world, our pieces our certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard, or GOTS. One of the key criteria for a textile product to carry the GOTS "organic" label is that it must contain at least 95% certified organic fibers.

Our next step in changing the fashion industry is to produce high-quality items. Now that clothes have become so cheap, people no longer care as much about quality, and will just buy new garments when the ones we have lose their shape or or when they get bored of them. We reject this mindset, and will only produce high quality products in styles that are timeless that you will wear and love for years to come.

On top of all this, we want to go above and beyond. TWAN aims to leave this planet better than we found it. That’s why we plant 10 trees for every item sold with our partners One Tree Planted. Trees are one of the best methods for reducing carbon in the atmosphere, making it a perfect initiative for fashion brands. Our hope is that we also inspire sustainable choices by other brands and consumers in the region to further our work towards the cause.
